Fruits from a different world

Fruits we most commonly eat in the states are oranges, apples, bananas, watermelon in the summer and a few simple others. We all know that in tropical places and even in the imported section of the grocery store you can find more exotic fruits like mango, star fruit and a few more. But with that said, coming to discover the fruit in Colombia was as if we landed on a different planet...one perhaps created by Dr. Suess.... were you can find the strangest fruits with colors, textures, shapes and flavors indescribable. One must see it to believe it.

Here are a few we have tried but there are even more. The fruits, their availability and affordability, have been one of our favorite delicacies in Colombia.

Pitaya, grown from a cacutsm really tasty, weird texture helps you go to the bathroom.

La GuanĂ¡bana the texture of snot but a great taste! These are huge, and make an awesome juice when blended with milk.

Maracuya- Tart, slimy and makes an awesome juice when blended with water and sugar

Pumpkin like, sweet and dry texture

Lulo,,,a fury fruit that is green and hard to explain but makes the BEST juice!

Granadilla, smells and taste like flowers and has the texture of frog eggs

Mangostino, a personal favorite best compared to leches

Borojoa- the hardest to explain- perhaps the best word is hearty...

Tomate de arbol....tomatoes from a tree, make kind of a strange drink that is a desired taste

Chontadoro...come from a palm tree, are boiled and eaten with honey and salt. Only found in the region we are in
