| A book we need to read |
Granted we just started working but the hard thing is we know how good it can be....I mean we really know how good it can be. So we plan on teaching for a while more internationally and then we will retire (okay I am exaggerating) but we know for sure we will take a year off.
The funny thing was when we were young and working service jobs we thought we need to contribute to society and have a meaningful job and now that we have that we want to be bums again. That is the problem with our generation we can so easily get what we want but the problem is finding out what it is that we want.
Well we have started to compile a short list of what we dream to do when we have our year off (we find this extremely motivating!)
1.Snowboard a lot and probably work at a mountain to procure a pass...(hang out with friends at night, drink good beer and hot-tub.) This is something we love and miss a lot.

2. Work at a new fishery in Northern Alaska with our friend Joe...specifically working on a tender for Herring. Joe is a Captain and assures us he can get us in. This is in a part of Alaska few people get to see and I am sure it would be an amazing experience. Not to mention we would be with good company, with lots of sail time to read and relax.

3. Take the ferry from Alaska to the lower 48 at the end of the fishing season. I have always wanted to do this but our schedule never permitted. I would love to see this area and do a long trip on a boat.

4. Pick Apples in the okanagan valley in Canada, Our good friend has been doing this for a number of years and explains the scene to be much like the one on the beach. Work really hard in the day and enjoy good company of interesting people in the evenings. Eat lots of apples and enjoy the beautiful landscape and weather of the valley.

5. Do a long distant bike trip with our friend Rafael....we were planning something like this last time we were together and we thought maybe of doing it in Cuba. We will have a good guide someone we won't be able to keep up with since he has ridden from Alaska to Quebec, Across Europe, and now he is planning some insane trip from France to India.

6. Walk El Camino (or something like that) A long distant hike maybe in Spain but chances are we won't want to spend too much money to fly because of the possibility of dream #8

7. Visit with new babies that my friend will hopefully have and that I know my sister-n-law will have.

There is a way to combine a few of these into one. I figured it all out.
ReplyDeleteBuy a house in New England. Surf Wellfleet in the Summer. Hot tub and snowboard in the winter. Walk the Appalachian Trail to Canada on your vacation. Take a ferry back.
Work Winters at a mountain and work Summers fishing or lobstering off Gloucester, Maine, or the Cape. Also, visit with Eric a lot and listen to him tell stories that are loosely based on what actually happened.
OR.... now hear me out, I have thought about this plan for a while now and it will work. And I want you to do this. And I want to come visit.
ReplyDeleteBuy a house somewhere with a lot of land. The government will give you an awesome loan if you follow the plan below.
Buy the house and land. Build a fence. Get a dog. Join a farmer's co-op. Build a website in Spanish and English.
Raise goats and chickens, but mainly goats.
Goat meat and milk is the fastest growing food market in the US by FAR. Asian, Latin American, and Indian (yeah I know that is technically Asia, be quiet) and other areas' immigration to the US has sent the goat meat demand through the roof. Most of the goat meat comes from NZ and Australia with huge mark ups for transportation. It is also not fresh.
Owning a home and working from it is awesome. Being your own boss is difficult but more rewarding than otherwise for sure. Also having a goat farm would give you a reason to get an awesome German shepherd or great pyrenees dog to live with you and protect the herd from predators.
You would be most likely qualified to receive subsidies for farming/ranching and could do very well.
Of course, I have no idea how to start doing this, but you have the internet. Therefore, you can do anything.
